Terjebak di Tengah Argumentative Essay!
Suatu jurnal tanpa didasari thesis
statement yang jelas dapat dijadikan sebagai suatu gagasan atau topik
pembahasan. Pembahasan kali ini masih terkait dengan argumentative essay. Essay
ini berbeda dengan essay-essay yang lain karena dari tingkat penguatan
statement nya dan pendalaman informasi yang berbeda.
Argumentative essay merupakan suatu
teks essay yang tidak hanya memberikan informasi tetapi juga menampilkan sosok
argument yang didasari pros (pendukung ide) dan cons (penentang ide) terhadap
isu argumentative essay. Kita dianjurkan untuk menjelaskan dengan gamblang dan
menulis seolah-olah penulis mencoba meyakinkan pembaca untuk menyetujui dan
mempercayai sesuatu yang baru.
Dalam memilih topik argumentative
essay sangatlah tidak mudah, seperti:
Ø It should be narrowed down
e.g: X Marijuana should be considered illegal.

Selling
and using marijuana in public placs
should be considered illegal
Ø It should be contain an argument
e.g: X We should decide wheter we want a
bicycle or a car.

If
we are under the age of 30 and want a healty life, we should definitely get a
bicycle instead of a car.
Ø It should be a topic that can be
adequately supported
(with
statistic, outside source citations, etc)
e.g: X I feel that writing an argumentative
essay is definitely a challenging task.
Dalam penjelasan berikutnya yaitu
masih terkait dengan bagaimana cara menulis argumentative essay? Maka dari itu,
sebuah argumentative essay harus berdasarkan:

Reasoning
Alasan dan pemikiran sangatlah penting dan dapat dijadikan
acuan pada awal statement kenapa penulis menulis hal tersebut.
o
Evidense-not emotions
Penulisan argumentative essay sangatlah spesifik dan
cenderung dalam satu pembahasan atau topik, akan tetapidisertai pula dengan
sumber dan data yang mumpuni untuk meyakinkan pembaca terhadap apa yang penulis
pikirkan. Hal terpenting dalam penulisannya juga ialah seorang penulis tidak
boleh menulis sesuatu secara emosional apalagi menjatuhkan sesuatu terhadap apa
yang sedang dibahas.

Working thesis
Yang dimaksud working thesis ialah salah satu statement yang
pada akhirnya dapat dikembangkan kembali menjadi statement-statement yang lain
dan diletakkan pada awal kalimat.

pertama
(introduction)

-Some debatable issues cover a wide range of topics
e.g: “legalizing drugs”

broad a subject because topics within that issue include legalizing marijuana,
the effectiveness of the FDA.
Jadi, kita harus fokus terhadap satu topik dan sebaiknya
tidak terlalu luas.

Research
both sides of the topic thoroughly
-Evenf you know which side you want to argue, research can
give you ideas for counter arguments and help you paper show balance rather
than bias.

Develop
a working thesis
-State yur position on the issue and summarize your
argument’s main reasons in one sentence. Your body paragraphs should explain
your reasons fully.

Tahap
kedua
(Body Paragraph)
Option 1: present both sides of the issue, then state your opinion and
explain why you choose that side.

ini sangat berguna apabila kita tidak memiliki opini terhadap issu sebelumnya
untuk dicari sumbernyayang kemudian dikembangkan setelah itu, atau juga karena
audience tidak terlalu familliar terhadap topikmu sebelumnya.
One
half to two-thirds of yoour paper explains the issue, shows the two opposng
sides, and gives an asessment of each. This demonstrates that you have indeed
conducted research and are an expert on the subject.
Next,
when you state your position, readers might be more inclined to agree with you.
Last,
explain your reasons for choosing that side without repeating ideas from
previous paragraphs.
Option 2: state your opinion at the beginning. List and explain the reasns
for your choice. Acknowledge the other side’s arguments; then, disprove/refute
those arguments.

terhadap issue tersebut. Hal ini memperbolehkanmu untukbeberapa ketegasan
sehingga akan membuat argument yang kuat.
Select
the strongest evidence from your research and present your points usually one
point perbody paragraph.
Next,
explain one or two of the opposing side’s points to show how readers might
object to your argument. Then, show these arguments are not reasonable, not
logical, or not effective. Be sure to reassert your own view point and why it
is the best choice.
3.
Tahap
terakhir
(Revie and Edit)
Pretend
that your readers are a skeptical panel or jurors. You can best your arguments
by avoiding emotional or aggressive language and by using a mix of evidence
types-facts, statistict, examples, expert opinions, or even personal
experience.
Cite
your sources
To
increase the chances that your audience will agree with you, start body
paragraph with ideas that both sides agree upon before your point.
Know
the other side’s strongest arguments to defend againts challenges from other
students or your instructor.
In
your conclusion, emphasize why your topic is important, summarize your
arguments, and re-state your position as the most sensible choice. Do not include
newevidence or arguments.
Di sini, semua penjelasan di atas,
daat di ambil kesimpulan bahwa dalam penulisan argumentative essay jangan
sampai terjebak hanya karena tidak tahu arah kemana lagi harus mencari topik
yang akan dibahas. Kita dapat lebih berhati-hati dalam penulisan selanjutnya.
Dan yang terpenting ialah “detailed research” harus selalu dilakukan oleh
penulis.
