West Papua was created from the western
portion of Papua province in February 2003, initially under the name of Irian
Jaya Barat; it was later renamed Papua Barat (West Papua) on 7
February 2007. West Papua is the western part of New
Guinea is divided into 2 provinces
in Indonesia, Papua
and West Papua. The area is also
often simply called
as West Papua by various international media. West Papua has been a long time became a land of
conflict. In addition to horizontal
conflicts among civilians, vertical
conflict occurs between
the Indonesian government and the
Papuan people have sacrificed a lot of people. This
conflict has yet to be completely
resolved. Trough West Papua has struggle for independence from Indonesia
and it has long been ignored by the international community. This is
a huge homework. Government and all of
part of this country should keep the unity of Indonesia.
There are several reasons why we should keep
Papua still remain as a unitary
state of Indonesia. First, West Papua is a very valuable asset. As the largest province in Indonesia, West
Papua has many natural
resources. Its mining sector has been able to contribute
more than 50% of the economy of Papua, with copper, gold, oil and gas positions
can contribute to the economy. In the field of mining, the province has a
potential of 2.5 billion tons of rock ore and copper. Not yet other areas of
mining, agriculture, farming, and fishing. West
Papua is like country’s kitchen. They give many things, and Papua is our
future. Second, Free Papua Movement is the biggest cause
of conflict. Third, Indonesia would be humiliated for the
second time in the eyes of the world because it has been releasing some of the territory
for independence. Fourth, if Papua
became independent then this will give
a bad example to other
provinces. Especially for the provinces
that have the same desire as west Papua (e.g. Aceh and Maluku). And the last one, when many foreigners who
helped Papua for
independence such as Australia, Britain,
and America. Where
in these countries have also established offices
west of Papua free
movement. If true
Papua independence, then there is something that
must be paid by
Papua.
Government should have an attempt to
resolve this problem in Papua. dialogue
should be a regular
agenda of the government in an effort to provide
understanding of the parties
opposing such free
movement west Papua,
military, foreign companies, and of course the
Papuan people themselves. The
most important thing, government
should more aware and care toward Papua.
