Intervention via Papua
Introduction
Papuans should think a million times before deciding to separate from Indonesia, because there are at least two problems; Economic and Politic
Problem, that can arise after they separate from Indonesia. Here Papuans have to learn from the result of East Timor. After
they are do the referendum and go out from Indonesia is not final destination
for them since after that referendum east Timor face many other big problem on
economy and education.
Conflicts in Papuan is intervention
Eben wrote
about his research in West Papua, where West Papua is a province of Indonesia
located in the western part of New Guinea. The capital is Manokwari. Hearing
West Papua immediately flashed to mind about what is happening in this
province, from the past to the present West Papua is always full of complex
problems. The complexity of the problems that occurred in West Papua as settles
like a fire in the husk. High ethnic heterogeneity and complexity of indigenous
culture exists, as well as social movements in Papua have a complex history
that makes full of tension and conflict. Not to mention the ethnic, language,
creed / religion, social structure, traditions, and geographical conditions
vary.
OPM or separatism is one of the causes of the conflict in Papua.
Their goal is to create the impression to central governments and local
governments as well as international parties that Papua is often unsafe because
of the OPM itself, it is clearly aimed at thwarting ideas and noble desire of Papuans
for dialogue or discussion with the Indonesian government in the near future.
Papuans who are not OPM actually won’t the war as happened in Papua today. That
they really want is Indonesia government and Papuan sit together in one table
to discuss the way out of all the problems in Papua itself. Bu in the fact OPM is only tool for some
country to give intervention to Indonesia.
The Conflicts that happen in the West Papua actually is basis of
the intervention of America. A source in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
reveals the intense efforts of some members of the U.S. Congress from the
Democratic Party to the Free Papua Movement (OPM) to assist the process towards
independence Papua gradually. Truly, Papua is the next target for America to be
vanquished and dominated after Libya and the Middle East. This has been
revealed by military analysts Connie Rahakundini Bakrie that the scenario of
U.S. attacked Libyan and the Middle East has been designed from the
first. Because all of these countries have a large petroleum resources,
even Connie adds that the next U.S. target is Papua! Connie releases the
statement on AFP Saturday 26/3 2011 is not without basis. The news of
Papua became the next target of the U.S. have been circulating in intelligence
circles.[1]
How they are
making a conflict and intervention to the Papuans and Indonesia is Pitting. That’s
no wonder, because what these countries done on the Middle East is naturally
same with what they want to do in Papua. The example is the research of Eben Kirskey that conflict in Papua is about
‘Pitting’ who held by foreign company. Not only British Petroleum who provoket the
OPM, Indonesian military and native Papuan. But also the
other big company such as Freeport from USA.
According to newspaper reports the New York Times in 2005, PT Freeport
Indonesia claimed to have paid around 20 million U.S. dollars to the military
to forcibly evict residents from their territory from 1998 to 2004.[2]
Government needs to encourage them to meet, discuss, and formulate
collective views of a comprehensive policy for the resolution of the Papua
conflict. Thus, the comprehensive solution for Papua is searched and determined
collectively, and acceptable to all stakeholders, including the OPM. the
victims will be probably continued to fall and grow. The question that
should be asked is once the government has been promoting the welfare approach,
giving special autonomy status, pouring trillions of dollars, divide Papua into
two provinces, double the number of districts, and accelerate the development. That policy should be influenced to the
all aspect of the Papuans.
There are several reasons why we should keep Papua still remain as
a unitary state of Indonesia. First, separatism is not only a big problem for
Indonesia, because many countries have the same problem about that. So the
important thing that should be done for every country is keep their
nationality.
Second, the
separatism arise because of there are many problems on that country. In the
general situation is about the problem of Economy and Politic. if Papua became independent then this will give a bad example to
other provinces. Especially for the provinces that have the same desire as west
Papua (e.g. Aceh and Maluku). And the last one, when many foreigners who helped
Papua for independence such as Australia, Britain, and America.
The third, West Papua is a very valuable asset. As the largest province in
Indonesia, West Papua has many natural resources. Its mining sector has been
able to contribute more than 50% of the economy of Papua, with copper, gold,
oil and gas positions can contribute to the economy. In the field of mining,
the province has a potential of 2.5 billion tons of rock ore and copper. Not
yet other areas of mining, agriculture, farming, and fishing. Actually these become a problem solving of
Economic problem if we can explore the natural resources effectively.
Conclusion
The
complexity of the problems that occurred in West Papua as settles like a fire
in the husk. High ethnic heterogeneity and complexity of indigenous culture
exists, as well as social movements in Papua have a complex history that makes
full of tension and conflict. Not to mention the ethnic, language, creed /
religion, social structure, traditions, and geographical condition, Straighten out irregularities that occurred in the history of the
integration of Papua into the Republic of Indonesia. Communication between Indonesia’s
Government and all society of Papua is become important. Open discussion
Jakarta-Jayapura is such a good way to communicate effectively. About the
natural resources, the Government has to think more deeply about that. Because
exploration that held by another country is only makes problem in Papua.
